2004 Hyundai Tiburon Review:
Hyundai’s Tiburon is a model that wouldn’t fit into any other
car segment but the sporty coupe one it populates. Speedy
and responsive, it is first and foremost a driver’s car. When
you sit inside, fire on the engine and push the Tiburon to
the limits, you’ll most certainly agree.
To begin with, Tiburon means shark in Spanish. The title
is more than apt, both in terms of power and style. With a
flowing profile and gill-like front fender vents, the Tiburon
really does look like the automotive equivalent of a shark.
Hyundai hopes this year’s Tiburon behaves like a shark and
preys on the competition. With the type of value-packed price
that could only come from the Korean manufacturer, the Tiburon
gets an edge before the test drive even begins.
Under the Hood
And when the test drive does commence, it usually ends in
smiles.
This is especially true with the Tiburon GT, which is the
top-line trim for 2004. This year, the GT V6 benefits from
a re-tuned exhaust for a more aggressive sound and a few more
horses out of the engine.
That engine is a 2.7-liter V6 with 172 horsepower and 181
lb-ft of torque. There’s plenty of choice with the GT as well.
Customers can opt for one of three transmissions: 5-speed
manual, 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission with
manual-shift capability.
Base Tiburon models receive a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder
engine. It generates 138 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque.
This version of the front-wheel drive sporty coupe can be
had with either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission
with manual-shift capability.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Tiburon is a two-door hatchback with a predatory style
that befits its name. It allows four people to sit inside.
The standard features list of the 2004 Tiburon addresses
both comfort and safety. Base and GT models have air conditioning,
side-impact airbags, power windows, mirrors and door locks,
remote keyless entry with alarm and four wheel disc brakes.
In true sports car style, the Tiburon has dual chrome-tipped
exhaust outlets. GT models with 6-speed manual transmission
also have aluminum pedals.
Most of the options for 2004 come in numbered packages. For
example, the Option Package 5 includes a power sunroof, an
Infinity AM/FM/cassette/CD player, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped
shift knob and antilock brakes.
