2004 Jaguar S-Type Review:
There isn’t much to say about the Jaguar S-Type that isn’t
complimentary. After all, it is a typical Jag—stylish, sleek
and refined, with a comprehensive safety package and innumerable
standard items. Oh yeah, it’s also fast: the flagship S-type
R model goes 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
If you have the money, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better
car than the S-Type. One of its convenient features is an
electronic parking brake, which is operated by a console-mounted
switch. To engage, simply lift up; to release, press down.
The brake applies as the key is removed from the ignition,
and releases as the gear selector moves from the "park"
position.
That’s just the start. In terms of safety, the S-Type is
a luxury sedan that has everything covered. Child seat anchors,
dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags
and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are all standard.
Under the Hood
Each of the three 2004 Jaguar S-Type models has its own engine.
3.0 models use a 3.0-liter V6 engine with 235 horsepower at
6800 rpm and 216 lb-ft of torque at 4100 rpm. Standard transmission
for this engine is 6-speed automatic, though 5-speed manual
is available (limited order).
4.2 models are fitted with, not surprisingly, a 4.2-liter
V8 engine. It generates 294 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 303
lb-ft of torque at 4100 rpm. It’s also versatile, going from
0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds while still returning 28 miles per
gallon EPA highway mileage.
Then there’s the R. It blows everything out of the water
with its 4.2-liter supercharged V8, which cranks out a blistering
390 horsepower at 6100 rpm and 399 lb-ft of torque at 3500
rpm. The 2004 R is also equipped with sport suspension, computer-controlled
shock absorbers and adaptive cruise control.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The S-Type seats five very comfortably. With Jaguar, that
may even be an understatement.
Last year’s model was redesigned, with a new instrument panel.
If you want pure decadence and power at once, a glace at the
2004 R will do. It comes with heated 16-way power front seat,
rain-sensing wipers, an Alpine sound system with a 6-disc
CD changer and steering-wheel radio controls.
A navigation system and voice activation for some of the
driver’s controls are just some of the available options for
2004.
