2004 Jaguar X-Type Review:
There is a laundry list of aspects with the X-Type that Jaguar
can hype up for 2004. To begin with, it’s as refined a Jaguar
as you’ll find. But the X-type is also the least expensive
model from the British manufacturer, making it available to
many people who might have thought a Jag was out of reach.
For 2004, Jaguar boasts an effective $5,000 price reduction
on fully-equipped 3.0 models. While base models keep the same
tag, that is quite an eye-opener for potential buyers in the
market for luxurious performance from a compact four-door
sedan.
And there’s no doubting the X-Type’s ability to perform.
The only compact luxury sedan in the segment to offer all-wheel
drive continues to better itself. In fact, a 2003 J.D Power
& Associates Initial Quality Study showed a 22 percent
improvement in initial quality, making X-TYPE one of the most-improved
models surveyed.
Under the Hood
The base 2.5 model uses a 2.5-liter V6 engine. It offers
192 horsepower at 6600 rpm and 178 lb-ft of torque at 3000
rpm. 90 percent of its peak torque is available between 2500
and 6800 rpm, while over 80 percent is available from below
1500 rpm through the maximum engine speed of 6800 rpm.
The 3.0 model uses a 3.0-liter V6 engine with 227 horsepower
at 5600 rpm and 206 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm. Both engines
have such features as continuously variable cam phasing and
a 32-bit engine management system for pure performance coupled
with competitive fuel economy and low emissions.
The X-Type’s all-wheel drive system lets you take the refined
sedan to places others cannot go. It provides excellent handling
in all weather conditions, with sensors that deliver the appropriate
amount of power to slipping wheels under duress.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
These cars aren’t just nice to look at. The 2004 X-Type’s
practical interior features no less than 29 individual storage
compartments (30 with the trunk).
The standard features come in bunches as well. Both models
have air conditioning with automatic climate control, leather
upholstery, heated power mirrors, power windows and door locks,
remote keyless entry and an AM/FM/CD player.
3.0 models also feature a couple of options packages; one
that ups the performance and two that up the luxury content.
