2004 Land Rover Discovery Review:
The Discovery is a proven sport utility vehicle that fits
between the Freelander and Range Rover in the esteemed Land
Rover family. The company says that the Discovery is the most
traditional Land Rover model sold in North America, and who
are we to argue with them. After all, SUVs are their specialty.
The Discovery employs solid 'live' axles, a robust separate
ladder frame and a long-proven aluminum V8 engine. It is also
loaded with class-leading technology, which for 2004 gets
even more advanced with the addition of a number of new pieces
of equipment.
However, the major news for this long-serving luxury sport
utility vehicle is the availability of a new, limited-edition
G4 model. The G4 is named for the Land Rover-sponsored off-road
challenge. It takes the base S package, paints it orange and
adds self-leveling suspension, a front brush bar, rear access
ladder and lamp guards and unique cloth upholstery.
Under the Hood
The Discovery, like other Range Rover models, has no problem
going off the beaten trails. It uses a permanent four-wheel
drive system (AWD) that includes a 2-speed transfer case and
standard traction control. This year, the system gains a driver-activated
center differential that locks in a 50/50 front/rear torque
split for enhanced off-road traction.
Driving each of three 2004 Land Rover Discovery models is
an all-aluminum, 90-degree 4.8-liter V8 engine. It has done
the job for years, pumping out up to 217 horsepower at 4750
rpm and 300 lb-ft of torque at 2600 rpm.
4-speed automatic transmission is standard. At the top of
the pack, HSE models have self-leveling suspension and a rear-obstacle-detection
system. These items are optional for the other models.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The entry-level S model has 16-inch alloy wheels, while other
trims have 18-inch wheels. Antilock brakes are standard across
the line.
For 2004, S models get a standard in-dash single-disc CD
player. It adds to a package that already includes an 8-way
power driver seat and a 6-way power passenger seat, heated
power mirrors, power windows and door locks, remote keyless
entry and more.
SE models up the level of comfort with leather upholstery
and wood interior trim, dual power sunroofs, an Alpine AM/FM/cassette
player with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer and steering-wheel
radio controls.
