2004 Land Rover Freelander Review:
The Freelander is the entry-level model in the Land Rover
family, a compact SUV that lacks some of the more decadent
features of its siblings, but none of the ruggedness. Of course,
being at the starting point of the Land Rover lineup, it also
has the most affordable price tag.
For 2004, it’s all about looking good and new for the Freelander.
At the front, the SUV gets a redesigned front bumper and grille.
It also adopts the distinctive twin-pocket, clear lens headlamps
similar to the Range Rover. Land Rover says the new lights
provide 70 percent brighter illumination.
Both front and rear bumpers are now body colored. Keeping
with the rear, Land Rover repositioned the taillamps a little
bit higher in the bumper to improve their visibility and reduce
the likelihood of them being obscured by all that off-road
grime.
Under the Hood
One thing you can’t argue with Land Rover models is their
ability to get down and dirty with the best of them. The Freelander
has an all-wheel drive system that is complimented by other
high-tech electronic systems such as Hill Descent Control,
Electronic Traction Control, ABS and Electronic Brakeforce
Distribution.
This all adds up to one thing: the 2004 Freelander can burst
through water, go up and down muddy slopes and stop on a dime
when it needs to. All you have to do is buy one to experience
the ride.
There are three Freelander models for 2004, and all of them
use the same powertrain. The engine is a 2.5-liter V6 mated
to a 5-speed automatic transmission. It gets up to 174 horsepower
at 6250 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Freelander is offered as a four-door wagon and as a two-door
semiconvertible called the SE3. The SE3 is distinguished by
removable roof panels over the front seats and a removable
hardtop over the rear-seat/cargo area. Both body styles have
a swing-out cargo door with a segment-first power up/down
rear window.
Land Rover guarantees the build quality of the Freelander.
It is backed by a 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty,
a 6-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion perforation limited warranty
and Land Rover Road RecoverySM 24-hour service.
There are plenty of options this year. Among them are heated
front seats, leather upholstery, a Harman/Kardon AM/FM radio
with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer and more.
