2004 Lexus LS 430 Review:
The flagship sedan of the Lexus line is the 2004 LS 430,
a car of luxury, style and performance. This year the performance
has been enhanced following a trend found in many Lexus models
toward faster, more powerful vehicles with more aggressive
performance characteristics. On the LS 430 this means 6-speed
automatic transmission with manual shift gate to replace the
5-speed. Joining this is an optional Sport Package that includes
a firm Euro-Tuned Suspension and 18-inch wheels to replace
standard 17s.
Safety has also been upgraded with driver and front-passenger
knee airbags joining the usual complement of join head-protecting
curtain side airbags and front torso side airbags.
Under the Hood
Performance is one of the keys to Lexus distinction. The
LS 430 has a 4.3-liter V8 engine that puts out a solid 290
hp and 320lb-ft of torque. This is teamed with a computer
controlled 5-speed automatic transmission capable of 60mph
in only 6.3 seconds.
Intuitive Powertrain Control works with the electronic throttle
control (drive by wire) to smooth out acceleration and Shift
Logic Control allows the 5-speed automatic transmission to
respond to road grade and acceleration/deceleration activity.
Meanwhile, other features optimize handling and help the driver
in emergencies and/or poor driving conditions. Antilock brakes
(ABS) with Brake Assist and Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) are
both standard.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The major options packages add to an already extensive collection
of standard interior amenities. Additions for 2004 include
a tire-pressure monitor, steering-linked headlights, and power
rear sunshade. Other options include heated/cooled rear seats
and a rearview TV camera that displays on the dash-mounted
navigation system screen for reversing.
The DVD-based Lexus Navigation System with seven-inch screen
and voice-command control, front climate control seats with
heating and cooling controls, heated and cooled rear seats,
power trunk and door closers are just a few of the available
features but even more is available through the addition of
any of several packages. These give the choice of several
leather types and colors for the upholstery, along with a
range of other choices that will lead toward a personalized
machine.
