2003 Lexus SC 430 Review:
In 2004, Lexus has focused for the most part on performance
enhancements, with all their models seeing the addition of
more aggressive characteristics like bigger tires, larger
engines or improved suspension systems. The 2004 Lexus SC
430 is the exception. As the performance roadster of the line,
it already had all that in spades, with a big powerful V8
engine, 18-inch low profile racing tires rated for high speed
and 0-60mph in under 6 seconds. Instead, Lexus have introduced
the Pebble Beach Edition, upgrading the luxury for a truly
collectible stylish sports car for the driving, and golf,
enthusiast.
About 400 of the limited-run Pebble Beach Edition models
are due to be built, featuring Azure Pearl paint, Ecru leather
upholstery, special badging, a rear spoiler, run-flat tires
and a matching leather golf bag.
As for the rest, like last year’s model, the SC 430 has a
retractable metal hardtop, sophisticated performance mechanics,
extensive interior amenities and cutting edge electronics
and communications capability including Lexus Link through
the OnStar network. This system combines GPS satellite and
cellular phone technology to connect the customer 24/7 with
experienced and trained Lexus Link advisors at the touch of
a button or automatically in certain emergency situations.
Safety and security enhancements from this system include
automatic notification of air bag deployment, emergency service
and accident assistance dispatch, location, theft notification
and stolen vehicle tracking and even, remote door lock and
unlock.
Under the Hood
The SC 430 has a 4.3-liter V8 engine that produces 300 hp
and 325lb-ft of torque. Featuring Variable Valve Timing with
intelligence (VVT-i) and teamed with a computer controlled
5-speed automatic transmission with Shift Logic Control, Torque
Activated Powertrain Control and an Electronic Throttle Control
System (drive-by-wire), this powertrain is designed to optimize
power and minimize jerkiness from a standing start to the
top end of the engine’s range. The SC 430 manages 18-23 mpg,
city and highway.
The racing chassis, 18-inch wheels and fine-tuned front and
rear double wishbone independent suspension also contributes
to the control of the SC 430. Four-channel antilock brakes
(ABS) with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Force Distribution,
and Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) with Traction Control are all
standard features in 2004.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Lexus doesn’t offer much in the way of optional extras for
the SC 430 because all these are already included: a Mark
Levinson audio system designed specifically for the SC 430
with 9 strategically located speakers, cassette and an in-dash
6-CD changer; an advanced climate control system is designed
for convertible driving, adjusting airflow and temperature
automatically and, differentiating between top-up and top-down
driving needs, responding to the exterior temperature to help
ensure occupant comfort and of course, all-leather upholstery
and trim features.
However, you can order Lexus Link communications for one
year and even, run-flat tires for those James Bond moments,
but if you want the matching Golf Bag, you’ll have to get
your order in for the Pebble Beach Edition!
