2004 Lincoln Aviator Review:
The people at Lincoln are hoping the Aviator doesn’t go into
a sophomore slump, but if things continue as they left off
last year there should no reason to worry. The Aviator is
Lincoln’s mid-size SUV. Like all Lincoln models, it has a
heavy emphasis on luxury and performance. Styled like the
larger Navigator, the Aviator is similar to its massive relation
in many regards. However, it is not just a smaller version
without a style of its own.
For 2004, the Aviator is given a number of upgrades to improve
upon last year’s debut model. A standard tire-pressure monitoring
system, an upgraded DVD-based voice-activated navigation system
with in-dash 6-disc changer and available Roll Stability Control
all combine to form part of the impressive package for 2004.
Under the Hood
Like the Navigator, power and luxury merge with the Lincoln
Aviator. Both the Luxury and Premium model trims come equipped
with a 4.6-liter V8 that can produce up to 302 horsepower
at 5750 rpm and 300 lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm. In other
words, there is plenty of kick under the hood of this mid-size
luxury SUV.
The Aviator is available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel
drive, which emphasizes the SUV-heart of the model. 2004 Aviators
mate their tough, dependent V8 engine to a high-charged 5-speed
automatic transmission. A 4-wheel independent suspension configuration
dampens the biggest shocks, while power-assisted 4-wheel antilock
brakes does the stopping. Additional safety features include
standard dual front airbags, curtain side airbags, a battery
saver feature and rear park assist.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Aviator is big, bold and roomy. Its standard third-row
seat folds flat to the floor and the optional second-row 40/20/40
split bench seat combined with the standard third-row seat
offers seating for up to seven adult passengers. Not surprisingly,
the luxury SUV is also decked out with standard features:
dual power heated signal mirrors with memory and puddle lamps,
a keyless entry system, dual electronic automatic temperature
control, an AM/FM Premium CD/cassette stereo, power-adjustable
pedals, leather seating surfaces on first and second rows
and a color-keyed steering wheel with leather and wood trim
and duplicate audio and climate controls.
Uplevel Premium models add a six-disc CD changer, seven-spoke
machined aluminum wheels and heated and cooled driver and
passenger seats to the already full package of the base Luxury
trim.
Manufacturers also present an options list for the refined
2004 Aviator. Among those that catch the eye are a rear seat
entertainment system for the kids, a Class III trailer towing
package for the heavy work and a power moonroof for everyone.
