2004 Mazda B-Series Dual Sport Review:
The 2004 B-Series refers to an array of compact Mazda pickup
trucks. There are three engines spread across the line, plus
three different model trims offered to discerning customers.
At the top of the line in terms of style are two Dual Sport
models: the B3000 Dual Sport and the B4000 Dual Sport (other
models covered separately).
Dual Sport models have a nice amount of standard features,
plus a unique driving setup that gives them quite a bit of
versatility. Though they are only offered with rear-wheel
drive, they employ a raised suspension configuration that
is generally found on four-wheel drive models.
Dual Sport models come as two-door Cab Plus extended cabs,
and as four-door Cab Plus 4 extended cabs. Like most other
extended cab pickup trucks on the road today, the Cab Plus
4’s two rear doors are rear hinged—that is, they don’t open
independently of the fronts.
Under the Hood
B3000 Dual Sport models have a 3.0-liter V6 engine that generates
154 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. It comes mated to
a standard 5-speed manual transmission, though 5-speed automatic
is available. For 2004, the fuel ratings are as follows for
the B3000: 19/23 mpg (city/highway) for manuals, 17/22 mpg
for automatics.
The most powerful engine in the B-Series family is found
with the B4000. It comes equipped with a 4.0-liter V6 engine
with 207 horsepower and 238 lb-ft of torque. B4000s also have
standard limited-slip differential for better power transfer.
In addition, the B4000 features a standard Class III towing
hitch. When properly equipped, it gives the Dual Sport the
ability to tow up to 5740 lbs. That’s enough to handle a camper
or a boat.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Two rear jump seats are standard on Cab Plus 4, optional
on Cab Plus. For 2004, Mazda restyled the look of the B-Series
steering wheel and center dashboard. It is now quite a bit
more uncluttered-looking and clean.
Dual Sport models come with a nicely appointed standard features
list, though luxury trucks they are not. Both Dual Sport models
have rear privacy glass, air conditioning, an AM/FM/CD player,
carpeting, a sliding rear window, shiny alloy wheels and all-terrain
tires to handle the rough stuff.
For options, there’s a bedliner, a tonneau cover, side steps
and an automatic day/night rearview mirror with a compass.
