Mazda B Series Dual Sport
2004 Mazda B-Series Review:
In 2003, Mazda chose to call its lineup of compact pickup
trucks by the simple name Mazda Truck. And while that title
was as straight-forward as they come, it was perhaps lacking
a little in terms of inventiveness.
To relieve this, the makers at Mazda went back to the original
title: the B-Series. One thing they didn’t change with the
truck was the principles that have made it a formidable model
in the class for years—affordability, ruggedness and comfort.
The Mazda B-Series shares a similar design with the Ford
Ranger. Like the Ranger, the B-Series is offered in a vast
array of models that give customers plenty of configurations
and price ranges to choose from. Base and SE models are also
joined by two Dual Sport models for 2004 (covered separately).
Under the Hood
2004 models also breakdown based on their engines into B2300,
B3000 and B4000 trims. B2300s and B3000s are rear-wheel drive
only; B4000s offer rear drive or 4WD that must be disengaged
on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing.
B2300 models use a 2.3-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. It
produces a modest 143 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque.
Stepping up one level on the power scale moves you to the
B3000. It has a 3.0-liter V6 engine that generates 154 horsepower
and 180 lb-ft of torque.
The most powerful model on the lot is the B4000, offered
in both base and SE levels. It comes equipped with a 4.0-liter
V6 engine with 207 horsepower and 238 lb-ft of torque. B4000s
also have a raised suspension setup and all-terrain tires
for more rugged applications.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The 2004 Mazda B-Series is said to be offered in two body
styles, but the real number is three. There are regular cabs
and Cab Plus extended cabs. However, the extended is called
a Cab Plus 4 when it is equipped with two rear-hinged rear
doors.
Two rear jump seats are standard on Cab Plus 4, optional
on Cab Plus. For 2004, Mazda restyled the look of the B-Series
steering wheel and center dashboard. The result is a cleaner,
more uncluttered appearance so you can get down to the important
stuff: driving.
