2004 Mazda MPV Review:
For the second straight year, Consumer Guide has endorsed
the Mazda MPV with its esteemed ‘Recommended’ title. To achieve
this, a vehicle has to pass vigorous road tests, offer a wide
variety of comfort and functional equipment and have a decidedly
reasonable price.
That, in a word, sums up Mazda’s MPV. The minivan is highly
capable and equally affordable. It isn’t intended to be in
the luxury class, but it is intended to drive you and your
family for years.
A number of changes are found with the 2004 MPV. The major
revisions have to do with styling. This year, the MPV gets
a new look at the front and the rear. The inside gets touched
up as well, with interior trim revisions accompanied by a
new steering wheel, bright gauge surrounds and a spring assist
designed to ease the third-row's fold-into-the-floor function.
Under the Hood
Under the hood of the 2004 Mazda MPV you’ll find a capable
3.0-liter V6 engine. It delivers up to 200 horsepower at 6200
rpm and 200 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm. A 5-speed automatic
transmission is mated to the MPV’s V6.
All MPV models have antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and power
steering. Uplevel ES models are a bit more stable and safe
than the base LX. They include traction control, fog lights
and front side airbags.
Some families need a minivan that can be used to haul goods
as well as transport people. For this, Mazda offers a Four
Seasons Towing Package. It includes a rear heater, heated
mirrors, a heavy-duty wiper motor, a larger washer tank, transmission-oil
cooler and a heavy-duty battery and radiator. The result:
a 3000-lb towing capacity.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The MPV is able to sit seven. The standard dual sliding side
doors have roll-down power windows. Power-operated side doors
are offered as well.
The standard package of the base LX model comes with all
the necessities. Front and rear air conditioning, a tilt steering
wheel with radio controls, cruise control, a side table, power
mirrors, windows and door locks and an AM/FM/CD player all
included.
There are quite a few options that can be had for 2004. For
entertainment, there’s a rear-seat DVD system. On the functional
side of things, there’s a cargo organizer and an automatic
day/night rearview mirror.
