2004 Mazda Miata Review:
Mazda isn’t too shy about noting that the Miata is the world’s
best-selling sports car, and for good reason—one doesn’t have
to explain that one. There are quite a few attributes of the
Miata that make is so popular, but none are more important
than overall build quality.
Another key is value. For the second straight year, Consumer
Guide has given the Mazda Miata the coveted ‘Best Buy’ distinction,
which essentially means that for your money, the Miata is
the best car in the segment.
The concept behind the Miata is simple: oneness between car
and driver. When you sit inside the roadster, you begin to
understand what they mean. Then, after firing it on and taking
a few turns, the principle becomes fully clear.
Under the Hood
The performance of the Mazda Miata is nothing short of sporty.
The powertrain configuration consists of a 1.8-liter inline
4-cylinder engine with 142 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque.
Thanks to a DOHC 16-valve cylinder head design, a 10.0:1 compression
ratio and variable valve timing (VVT) on the intake tract
pumps, the I4 is able to really pump things up—to the tune
of 7000 rpm, to be exact.
There are three different transmissions available: a 5-speed
manual, a 6-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. Basically,
the choice is yours: do you want a transaxle that lets you
control the shift points for optimal performance, or would
you rather sit back and let the car do it for you?
Front and rear independent double-wishbone suspension with
gas-filled shock absorbers, front and rear stabilizer bars
and a front suspension tower brace keep the ride nice and
level. Of course, the steering is power-assisted.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
All Miatas have a manual-folding soft top with a heated glass
rear window. A removable hardtop is optional. Newly-restyled
16-inch wheels are also spread across the lineup.
The Miata has a windblock panel that does just what its name
implies it should. Other features that can be had with the
Miata, depending on the trim level, are leather upholstery,
power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry
and a Bose sound system with an AM/FM/CD player.
Optional for 2004 are appearance packages with rear mud guards
and unique lower-body sills.
