2004 Mazda RX-8 Review:
The Mazda RX-8 reaches into the past for its design inspiration.
Not just with its rotary engine is the 2004 RX-8 model exceptional,
but also for the revitalization of the famous RX-7, which
was last offered in 1995 and which serves as the foundation
under the new RX-8.
The RX-7 was a two-seat, two-door model, but the new RX-8
is a unique four-seat, four-door sports car. It features a
two-passenger rear seat and two small, rear-hinged doors behind
the front doors. The rear doors do not open or close independently
of the front. The official word from Mazda is that the RX-8
provides a superb combination of sports car styling, dynamic
performance and functionality.
Under the Hood
The engine under the hood of the 2004 Mazda RX-8 is certainly
unique. While most conventional engines use pistons that move
up and down in cylinders, the rotary engine uses triangular-shaped
rotors that spin inside oval-shaped housings. When mated to
the RX-8’s 4-speed transmission, the result is 207 horsepower
of thrust and 164 lb-ft of torque. 5-speed manual transmission
models feature a total of 247 horsepower and 159 lb-ft of
torque.
Two sport packages are available if you want to liven up
the performance. For automatics, traction control, an antiskid
system, limited-slip differential, xenon headlights, upgraded
brakes and sport suspension are all added. Manuals get traction
control, the antiskid system and xenon headlights.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The new RX-8 uses its increased size (over the old RX-7)
to provide drivers and passengers more space to relax in.
Though more of a roadster, there is still enough room to do
the shopping and go on weekend trips.
Standard features on the 2004 RX-8 include cruise control,
front and rear bucket seats, air conditioning, a tilt leather-wrapped
steering with radio controls, cloth upholstery, power mirrors,
windows and door locks, remote keyless entry and an AM/FM/CD
player.
An optional Grand Touring Package adds leather upholstery,
heated front seats and a 6-way power driver seat with lumber
adjustment. A navigation system is also offered—so you don’t
have to go through the embarrassing task of asking somebody
for directions when you’re lost.
