2004 Mercedes-Benz CLK Review:
The CLK is sort of like the C-Class line of vehicles offered
up by the distinguished German manufacturer. It has relatively
the same size and standard features, and could be seen as
an uplevel model in the C-family were it not for its body
styles and sheer amount of available trims.
CLKs come as two-door, four-passenger models in either coupe
or convertible body styles. The coupe has true, pillarless
hardtop styling with no middle roof posts. The convertible
has a fully automatic power top, heated glass rear window
and roll bars in the rear headrests designed to pop up if
sensors detect an impending rollover.
There are spine-tingling engines, plenty of standard features
and numerous eye-catching options available for 2004. It all
comes with being a Mercedes.
Under the Hood
To start things off, Mercedes equips CLK320 models with a
3.2-liter V6 engine. Modest for the family, it delivers up
to 215 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 229 lb-ft of torque at 3000
rpm.
Moving up to the CLK500 model pushes you past the 300-horsepower
mark. Its 5.0-liter V8 engine delivers 302 horsepower at 5600
rpm and 339 lb-ft of torque at 2700 rpm.
Finally, there’s the CLK55 AMG, developed by Mercedes' AMG
performance arm. It uses a 5.4-liter V8 and specially-tuned
sports suspension. The result is a whopping 362 horsepower
at 5750 rpm and 376 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
All use a 5-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift
feature. The CLK55 adds manual-shift steering-wheel buttons.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
There are countless features to speak of and many additional
options as well. Mercedes' TeleAid assistance is standard
with the 2004 CLK. It uses cellular and GPS technology to
provide a 24-hour connection to a Mercedes-Benz customer representative.
It automatically notifies a representative in emergency situations,
or you can contact one yourself with a simple push of a button.
Options include Mercedes' COMAND video-screen control for
audio and available navigation and phone systems. Also offered
is front and rear-obstacle detection and Mercedes' Distronic
cruise control. It is designed to maintain a set following
distance from the car in front of you.
Then, there’s Keyless Go, a credit-card-sized transmitter
that allows the driver to start the car via a shift-knob button
rather than the ignition key. And really, that’s just touching
on a few of the options.
