2004 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Review:
If you’re interested in a two-seat luxury sports convertible,
chances are you’ll eventually come to Mercedes-Benz and its
formidable duo, the SL-Class and the SLK-Class. If money is
not an option and you want a roadster with nearly 500 horses
under its hood, the logical choice is the SL-Class.
However, if money doesn’t grown on trees in your world, but
you still want power, style and performance along with your
open-air driving, you won’t feel at all cheated with the SLK-Class.
It is roughly half the price of the SLK, but not half the
package.
The 2004 SLK-Class is offered in three models, all with a
metal hardtop that powers in and out of the trunk. In one
of the changes this year, a new special-edition package is
available for the SLK230 and SLK320. It adds 17-inch wheels,
Nappa leather sport seats and roll bar, exterior chrome accents
and a body-colored grille.
Under the Hood
There are three engines powering the SLK-Class this year.
However, all models include antiskid/traction control, side
airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes with brake assist.
A 2.3-liter supercharged inline 4-cylinder engine drives
the SLK230. It gives the rear-wheel drive convertible 192
horsepower at 5500 rpm and 200 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm.
SLK320 models have a 3.2-liter V6 engine. It produces 215
horsepower at 5700 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm.
The top-line SLK32 features a 3.2-liter supercharged V6 with
an eye-popping 349 horsepower at 6100 rpm and 332 lb-ft of
torque at 3000 rpm. In addition, the SLK32 has modifications
to its suspension, transmission, bodywork and interior, all
by Mercedes' AMG performance team.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
There are even more standard safety features with this year’s
SLK-Class. All models have Mercedes' TeleAid assistance system
and its BabySmart right-side airbag deactivation feature.
The base package offers such goods as a leather-wrapped steering
wheel, leather upholstery, heated power mirrors with turn
signals and driver-side automatic day/night, power windows
and locks, remote keyless entry and more.
The SLK32 and Special Editions have 17-inch wheels that are
optional on the other models in place of their standard 16s.
Other options include a voice-activated integrated cellular
telephone and special paint.
The result is drop-top style, performance and significance.
