2004 Mercedes-Benz C-Class (200 Models) Review:
Mercedes fills up its C-Class with such an array of possible
vehicles that it really should be broken into two groups:
the C-200 Class and the C-300 Class. At the lower end of the
spectrum in terms of power, price and features are C-200 models
(C-300 models covered separately). But then again, to say
that any Mercedes model is lacking is truly an injustice.
Speed, refinement, safety and quality—all things you should
demand from a model made by the German manufacturer. And these
are all things you get. With the C-Class, there are sedan,
coupe and wagon body styles.
For 2004, Mercedes simply adds to the premium level of appointments
each and every C-Class model receives. All models are now
factory prewired to accept a newly optional dealer-installed
satellite radio. In addition, Sports Coupes now have a standard
3-spoke steering wheel, enlarged chrome exhaust tip and other
sporty appearance features.
Under the Hood
There are two engines with the 2004 C-200 Class. The first,
found with C230 Sports Coupe and Sport Sedan models, is a
1.8-liter supercharged inline 4-cylinder engine. It will give
you 189 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 192 lb-ft of torque at
3500 rpm.
C240 wagons and sedans have perhaps a little less jump to
their step. The engine they use is a 2.6-liter V6. It generates
168 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 4500
rpm.
C230 Sports Coupe and Sport Sedan editions come with sport-tuned
suspension and manual transmission. However, they can also
be had with a 5-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift
mode, which is standard with C240 models.
If you’re interested, Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system
is available for any automatic-transmission C-class sedan
or wagon (except C230 models).
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Mercedes C-Class is similar in size to the Audi A4. Two-door
coupes seat four people, while four-door sedans and wagons
will hold five.
All passengers—and driver—are thoroughly protected in all
Mercedes models. For example, C-Class vehicles come with such
features as antilock 4-wheel disc brakes with brake assist,
antiskid/traction control, front/rear side airbags, head-protecting
curtain side airbags and Mercedes' BabySmart child-seat recognition
system.
Options for 2004 include Mercedes’ TeleAid telematics system,
an in-dash 6-disc CD changer and a navigation system.
