2004 Mercury Grand Marquis Review:
The Grand Marquis is the flagship model of the Mercury division,
their highest-selling vehicle ever and the car that
has carried them through thick and thin. Boasted to be America’s
favorite six-passenger, body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive, V8
powered large sedan, it isn’t hard to see why the people at
Mercury are so fond of the Grand Marquis.
There are quite a few improvements to this year’s Grand Marquis
model. For starters, there’s new exterior and interior styling.
Mercury also advertises improved ride, handling, comfort and
convenience features for the 2004 Grand Marquis. Offered in
two new exterior colors, Dark Toreador Red and Dark Blue Pearl,
there’s also a limited-edition feature car this year.
Other improvements see more optional equipment offered. Dual
side airbags can be had for added security, while heated front
seats and a moonroof stand out in the comfort and convenience
department.
Under the Hood
One strong engine powers the 2004 Grand Marquis, though an
upgrade can be had with a special Handling Package. The base
engine is a 4.6-liter V8. It gives the Grand Marquis up to
224 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 272 lb-ft of torque at 4000
rpm. Standard across the line is 4-speed automatic transmission.
The optional handling package, offered with LS Premium and
top-line LS Ultimate models, includes special handling suspension
and rear load-leveling suspension with unique springs. With
a dual exhaust, it pushes the horsepower rating up to 239.
The Grand Marquis handles well no matter what the model,
though the optional handling package certainly increases responsiveness.
All-speed traction control, which uses antilock brakes and
throttle intervention to manage wheelspin, is standard on
the GS Convenience, LS Premium and LS Ultimate.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Grand Marquis is large and roomy. It has 111.2 cubic
feet of passenger volume. In addition, the trunk of the Grand
Marquis is the largest in its class, with 20.6 cubic feet
of space.
There are four trims to choose from, so you can definitely
vary in the amount of standard equipment and price. Base GS
models have air conditioning, cruise control, cloth upholstery,
a column shifter, power windows and door locks and an AM/FM/CD
player, among other things.
LS Premium models can be ordered with the new Limited Package,
which includes front side airbags, heated front seats, unique
interior and exterior trim and special alloy wheels.
