2004 Mercury Monterey Review:
The Monterey is a brand-new minivan from Mercury. At first
glance, the term luxury immediately springs to mind. Though
it has a flair all its own, the Monterey still fits into the
family, with a traditional Mercury styling that resembles
the Mountaineer.
The inside of the Monterey was given special attention. Mercury
says that it tripled its investment in interior design, with
Monterey being the direct result. That’s definitely good news
for people looking for an upscale minivan that goes above
and beyond the call of duty.
The Monterey comes in a single body length that matches in
size the extended-length versions of many rival minivans.
For its debut, the 2004 Monterey provides a segment-exclusive
Safety Canopy side curtain airbag protection system with rollover
sensors—standard on Luxury and Premier versions.
Under the Hood
The Monterey is a front-wheel drive model, with one engine
standard with Convenience, Luxury and Premier trims. It is
a 4.2-liter V6 with 201 horsepower at 4250 rpm and 263 lb-ft
of torque at 3650 rpm. Other features include triple hydromounts
for quietness and the latest generation of fast transmission
hydraulics for quicker and smoother shifting.
The new Monterey tows up to 3,500 pounds, if needed. It comes
equipped with a 26-gallon fuel tank—enough for a round trip
journey from Detroit to Chicago, Mercury says.
Safety is a top priority for the Monterey minivan. It provides
more than 30 safety and security features, including a stability
control system with traction control and panic brake assist,
three-point safety belts and head restraints at all seating
positions, a tire-pressure monitoring system and available
self-sealing tires.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Simply looking at the Monterey, both inside and out, gives
you an indication of its upscale style. The exterior features
satin aluminum accents and monochromatic body-side cladding.
Inside, there’s a fold-into-floor third-row seat, a folding
second row, versatile and cleverly designed storage areas
and both woodgrain and chrome accents.
In the middle of the model packs sits the versatile Luxury
model, so named because of its standard equipment. The package
includes leather upholstery, heated front seats, a memory
system (driver seat, mirrors, pedals), power sliding rear
doors, heated power mirrors with turn signals and an AM/FM
radio with in-dash 6-disc CD changer.
Options include a DVD system, a smoker’s package and a cargo
management system.
