2004 Mercury Sable Review:
The Sable is a family car for people on a reasonable budget.
It is a versatile midsize vehicle offered in sedan and wagon
body styles. The price won’t blow you out of the water—however,
nor will most of its features. But if it’s reliability and
safety you’re looking for, plus confident performance, then
the Sable could be right for you.
However, that is not to say that the Sable is cheap by any
means. The Sable has a modest style that is bolstered even
more for 2004. This year’s Sable has a new grille and front
fascia on LS Premium models, while sedans get a revised rear
fascia and new tail lamps. If it’s the look of wood you like,
the new wood grain package should be of some interest.
Antilock brakes are a no-charge option this year. There are
also two new exterior colors, Merlot and Medium True Blue.
Under the Hood
A 3.0-liter Duratec V6 engine powers the front-wheel drive
Sable. It delivers 155 horsepower at 4900 rpm and 185 lb-ft
of torque at 3900 rpm. The Duratec engine has a redesigned
front cover, cam cover and PCV (positive crankcase ventilation)
system for improved noise, vibration and harshness.
The sole transmission is a 4-speed automatic overdrive system
with adaptive shift control programming. Mercury maintains
that the system keeps an even shift quality throughout the
life of the transaxle. Like other parts of the powertrain,
Sable transaxles have been improved for 2004—with fast-acting
hydraulics and shift quality improvements.
Sable wagons and sedans use variable-assist power rack-and-pinion
steering, which reduces assist levels at highway speeds to
improve driving feel. On the other hand, at slow speeds the
system increases boost for easy maneuverability.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Sable sedan is available both as a five-passenger model
and a six-passenger model. Five-passenger models use a floor-mounted
shifter and front center console. Six-passenger Sables feature
a flip-fold center seat that can be configured to present
a center armrest, two cup holders, a coin holder and cassette
storage.
With an optional rear-facing third-row seat, the Sable GS
station wagon can fit eight passengers. GS models also have
air conditioning, cloth upholstery and power mirrors, windows
and door locks.
Options for 2004 include a power sunroof, leather upholstery
and a Mach sound system.
