2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse and Spyder Review:
All you really have to do is take a look at either the Eclipse
or Spyder convertible to realize what the intentions of these
sporty models are. Simply put, they are driver’s cars, equipped
with performance packages that are quick, responsive and satisfying.
The Eclipse coupe is brother to the Spyder convertible. The
distinction between the two is quite obvious. However, apart
from their different body styles, the two share similar powertrains,
features and safety components. In addition, both come in
GS, GT, and GTS trims; there's also a base RS coupe.
As mentioned, their appearance evokes a sense of adventure
and fun; even a little aggression. Their design follows Mitsubishi's
"Geo-Mechanical" theme, which was first established
in a series of unique Mitsubishi concept cars. The design
aesthetic explores elemental, geometric forms that evoke the
strength, motion and power of the Machine Age.
Under the Hood
There are two engines spread across the full Eclipse and
Spyder lineup. The first engine is found with RS and GS models.
It is a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder model with 147 horsepower
at 5500 rpm and 158 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
The other engine adds more push, and is found when you look
under the hood of GT and GTS models. It is a 3.0-liter V6.
With the Eclipse coupe, it produces 200 horsepower at 5500
rpm and 205 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Spyder convertibles
get 210 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 205 lb-ft of torque at
37500 rpm.
Three transmission types are offered: 5-speed manual, a straight
4-speed automatic and a 4-speed automatic with a manual-shift
feature.
The 4-speed automatic system features Adaptive Shift Control,
which provides an unlimited variety of shift patterns to suit
both how you drive and the driving conditions that you encounter.
The manual-shift mode of the transmission found with GS, GT
and GTS models doesn’t involve using a pedal. Instead, shifting
gears is as simple as pushing the shift lever forward to up-shift
or pulling back to downshift.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
2004 Mitsubishi Spyders have a standard power top with a
heated glass window. All models include air conditioning,
a CD stereo, power windows and locks and alloy wheels.
There are three wheel sizes for 2004: 17-inchers on GT and
GTS, 16s on GS and 15s on RS.
