2004 Mitsubishi Galant Review:
The 2004 Mitsubishi Galant has grown this year, moving into
the midsize class and bringing a more power, more size and
some redesigned features. It is still a core component of
the Mitsubishi line as a front-wheel drive sedan with basic
styling, reliability, value and comfort as design priorities
but now it offers more to the consumer.
Part of the reason for Galant’s commercial success in North
America is its versatility. This car comes in four trim levels
and has two engines on offer. The gap between the capabilities
of the base 4-cyl DE and the top-level V6 GTS is a big one
but neither power offering will disappoint, with an additional
20 hp giving some oomph and some passing punch to the 4-cylinder.
The Galant runs through 4-cyl DE and ES models and then V6
powered LS and GTS trim levels.
Under the Hood
The 4-cyl is a 2.4-liter overhead cam engine with 160 hp
at 5500 rpm and 157 lb-ft of torque at 4000. It is teamed
with a 4-speed automatic transmission and gets 23/30 mpg (city/hwy).
The V6 is a different story. 3.8-liters of engine displacement
puts out 230 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. All this power doesn’t
cost too much in the fuel economy department with 19/27 mpg.
Again, the sole transmission choice is a 4-speed automatic.
The different trim-levels have different performance, safety
and control components equipped as standard. For example,
all models have dual-front airbags and 4-wheel disc brakes
but antilock isn’t standard until you add a V6 engine. Front-side
airbags come on board on the GTS trim but shares traction
control with the LS. Finally, the GTS also adds sport suspension,
a rear spoiler, alloy wheels and 215/55R17 tires.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Mitsubishi Galant line, like the Lancer, is designed
to be both accessible to those on a limited budget but still
have trim levels that would appeal to those looking for more
luxury. Nevertheless, they offer a pretty solid collection
of standard amenities on the base DE model. Standard equipped
interior amenities include the following: air conditioning,
AM/FM/CD player, power windows, doors, and steering, front
bucket seats with a height-adjustable driver seat variable
intermittent wipers and more.
By the time you reach the GTS level you can add luxuries
automatic climate control, leather upholstery with an 8-way
power driver sea, power sunroof and heated power mirrors,
just to name a few items that top off the luxury amenities
list.
Infinity audio system and other features are available at
this trim level as standards but throughout the trim levels,
many Mitsubishi options are available making this new mid-size
sedan a worthy entry to the class.
