2004 Mitsubishi Outlander Review:
The Mitsubishi Outlander, introduced last year, is a tall
wagon based upon the Lancer sub-compact car. This year, Mitsubishi
decided a power boost of 20 hp was warranted, giving a little
more passing power to this crossover type vehicle without
sacrificing handling, fuel efficiency, the great cargo capacity.
The result is a vehicle that likes getting dirty, is easy
to park and pay for and convenient to load up. A great vehicle
for families and those who want some SUV features without
paying the SUV gas bill.
The 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander comes in LS or XLS trim levels
and it has a strong 4-cyl engine offered with either model.
All-wheel drive (AWD) or Front-wheel 2-wheel drive are available
for either trim. The AWD gives the Outlander strength in adverse
weather conditions.
Under the Hood
The 2.4-liter overhead cam 4-cyl engine on the Outlander
pumps out a sturdy 160 hp at 5750 rpm and 162 lb-ft of torque
at 4000 rpm. The 4-speed Sportronic automatic transmission
with manual shift capability is retained from last year allowing
the shifting of gears at the touch of finger-operated buttons
for those circumstances when a little more control over acceleration
is required or desired. The engine gets 20/26 mpg (city/hwy)
when coupled with this transmission.
All-wheel drive is available on both models while dual front
airbags are standard. A roof rack and rear spoiler is standard
on the XLS, along with fog lights, alloy wheels and rear privacy
glass. Antilock brakes are an optional extra but the power
sunroof and Infinity audio is included with the All-Wheel
Drive on the XLS. The full-size spare tire (225/60R16) and
a tachometer add additional standard value to both models.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Mitsubishi vehicles tend to offer high level of standard
equipped interior amenity and the Outlander is no exception.
The base model LS has air conditioning, cruise control, power
windows, doors, mirrors, steering, and an AM/FM/CD player.
Small details include such styling subtleties as an analog
clock and other items while useful interior features that
are sometimes skimped on at this level are included, such
as variable-intermittent front and rear wipers.
The XLS adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote keyless
entry and matched Mitsubishi floor mats.
Options packages like the Appearance, Sun and Sound or Luxury
packages allow even more flexibility in style or luxury detailing
with optional extras like a power sunroof or leather upholstery.
