2004 Nissan Murano Review:
The 2004 Murano has once again set Nissan atop the automotive
industry in terms of pioneering new, stylish models. One look
at the crossover vehicle and you will undoubtedly agree. Halfway
between a wagon and a sport utility vehicle, the Murano is
sleek, bold and highly capable.
The Murano shares a car-base platform used by the popular
Altima. As such, it handles extremely well for a larger vehicle.
It comes in two models and offers an all-wheel drive setup.
The AWD configuration, however, lacks low range gearing. On
the other hand, it does have a console button that locks its
all-wheel drive into a 50-50 power split for extra traction.
2004 Muranos try and build on the momentum from last year’s
debut. Not surprisingly, they don’t round in with a wash of
new features. They simply remain solid, well-mannered vehicles
for families or individuals.
Under the Hood
The 2004 Murano shares an award-winning engine that powers
many of the vehicles in the Nissan stable. It is a 3.5-liter
V6 engine with a 24-valve, double overhead cam design. With
it, the Murano is able to boast 245 horsepower at 5800 rpm
and 246 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm.
Right on the cutting edge of engineering technology, the
Murano uses Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission).
Rather than employing traditional gears, it shifts between
a near infinite number of ratios to keep the engine in its
most efficient range. The result is better fuel economy.
For 2004, a 6-speed manual mode with the CVT is available
on SE models. With the SE, you also have sport-tuned suspension
and high-intensity-discharge headlights.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Nissan’s four-door Murano has two rows of seating for a five-passenger
capacity. It also offers up to 81.6 cubic feet of cargo volume.
Both Murano models come with such standard interior items
as air conditioning with dual-zone automatic climate controls,
a tilt leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls,
an 8-way power driver seat with lumbar adjustment, power mirrors
and door locks and an AM/FM/CD player.
The list of available options lets you increase the control
and safety features of the Murano, plus the comfort level.
For the latter aspect of driving, Nissan makes a DVD entertainment
system and a digital Bose audio system available.
