2004 Nissan Sentra Review:
With its Sentra, Nissan holds the key to the small car vault
of superiority. The ever-questioning philosophy there is simple:
Why not build an affordable car that also looks great? Why
not build it to complement your sense of independence and
fuel your sense of power? Why not give it outstanding quality
and reliability for the years ahead?
Good questions all of them. For years Nissan has asked itself
these questions when building the Sentra, revealing a passion
for packing a whole lot of punch into a little car. That is
not to say that the Sentra is a speedster. Hardly. But it
will run for years and years and take you wherever you need
to go.
Under the Hood
The 2004 Nissan Sentra features engines that are reliable,
not overly powerful. 1.8 base and S models have a 1.8-liter,
4-cylinder engine that produces with 126 horsepower at 6000
rpm and 129 lb-ft of torque at 2400 rpm. 2.5 S and SE-R models
have a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder motor with 165 horsepower at
6000 rpm and 175 lb-ft at 4000 rpm.
Though small, the Nissan Sentra doesn’t offer a clunky, bumpy
ride. It is smooth and stable, thanks to a responsive independent-strut
front suspension and a multi-link beam rear suspension.
The 2004 Sentra also features speed-sensitive steering. At
low speeds the steering is lighter, making it easier to maneuver.
At higher engine speeds, such as on the freeway, the steering
becomes tighter for better feel.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The 2004 Sentra is a four-door model with new styling in
the front and back. It looks smoother and more refined this
year, essentially unlike other Sentras of the past. This is
especially so with the all-new SE-R Spec V model (covered
in a separate review).
The base 1.8 model has a bare bones list of standard features,
or just enough to satisfy the essentials. Naturally, as you
move up the trim list, you get more and more in the way of
appointments. However, even with the second-tier 1.8 S model,
you’re treated with air conditioning, power mirrors, windows
and door locks, remote keyless entry and an AM/FM/CD player.
With so many models to choose from, it’s not surprising that
there are many options as well. An Audio Fanatic Package,
available with SE-R models, is particularly noticeable if
you like a nice listening experience. It includes a Rockford
Fosgate sound system, a partial folding rear seat and a car
alarm.
