2004 Oldsmobile Alero Review:
The Oldsmobile Alero is a driver-friendly compact car that
comes in both coupe and sedan body styles. While the coupe
has two doors, sedans offer four—plus a bit more interior
space.
Oldsmobile is on the outs, so there are no changes to the
Alero from last year. That’s right, no changes. The very same
model from last year is again offered in 2004. So if you missed
your turn and still want to buy a piece of history, now’s
your chance.
The Alero is offered in a number of different trims to fit
the needs of its customers. From the base GX up through to
the performance-tuned GL2, there is a value-packed Alero waiting.
Under the Hood
Two engines power the 2004 Alero lineup of sedans and coupes.
GX and GL1 models, being on the entry-level side of things,
are given a 2.2-liter Ecotec inline 4-cylinder engine with
140 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to either
5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic.
Part of the Alero’s value lies in its gas mileage. 5-speed
manual models with the Ecotec engine have a nice rating of
25/33 mpg (city/ highway). This is a car that won’t guzzle
the fuel like an SUV can. And that’s good for everyone concerned.
GL2 and GLS models features a stronger 3.4-liter V6 engine
with 170 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. GL2 models are
the sporty ones; they have performance suspension and a flashy
rear spoiler.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Both models seat five passengers, though bigger occupants
would prefer the sedan’s full four doors. Either way, the
Alero will last: Oldsmobile offers GM’s most extensive warranty
at 5 years/60,000 miles.
The base GX package has a nice amount of standard features.
Air conditioning, cruise control, power door locks, an AM/FM/CD
player, digital clock, variable-intermittent wipers and a
rear defogger are just part of the equation. From there, you
can build on either by moving up a few trim levels, or simply
choosing some of the optional equipment available.
One such piece of optional equipment is XM Satellite Radio.
It allows you to play 100 digital channels from coast to coast.
With this feature, you’ll never find yourself music-less on
the road.
