2004 Oldsmobile Bravada Review:
The ‘Old’ in Oldsmobile was perhaps more of a prophetic inclusion
when the brand was first created than many may have realized
at the time. Or maybe not: everything eventually becomes old—now
it’s Oldsmobile’s turn.
If you still haven’t heard, America’s longest-standing branding
is slowly closing the book. They have begun phasing out their
lineup of cars and SUVs, ending quite an impressive reign
of auto making.
The GM division still offers three different models for 2004,
though you shouldn’t expect any major upgrades on any of them.
The Bravada, Oldsmobile’s sport utility vehicle, is one such
model. It is highly capable, tough and comfortable, but it
hasn’t been improved much for 2004. The only addition is the
availability of XM Satellite Radio.
Under the Hood
The engine under the Bravada’s hood is a 4.2-liter Vortec
inline 6-cylinder model. It generates 275 horsepower at 6000
rpm and 275 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm and is mated to a
4-speed automatic transmission.
The engine uses variable valve timing (VVT), which enables
it to produce full torque across a wider band and reduce exhaust
emissions. The engine's advanced "lost-foam" cast-aluminum
design contributes to weight savings, less machining and substantial
benefits in overall quality.
Bravada models are offered in a rear-wheel drive configuration
or an all-wheel drive configuration. The on-demand SmartTrak
helps all-wheel-drive Bravadas maintain good traction throughout
a variety of road conditions.
Rack-and-pinion steering turns the Bravada easily, while
a short-/long-arm front suspension and an exclusive air bladder
rear suspension offer superior driving comfort. Two different
suspensions are available on the all-wheel-drive Bravada:
the standard coil suspension or the air suspension found on
two-wheel-drive Bravadas.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Bravada is made available in only one trim level, but
it is filled up with standard comfort features. Air conditioning
with dual-zone automatic climate controls and rear climate
controls, a tilt leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio
and climate controls, cruise control, the OnStar System, leather
upholstery and an AM/FM/cassette/CD player with rear radio
controls start things off nicely.
For options, there’s XM Satellite Radio and a DVD system.
It includes a ceiling-integrated, fold-down 7-inch monitor.
Headphones are included so that rear seat passengers can enjoy
DVD entertainment while those in front listen to the CD player
or radio.
