2004 Oldsmobile Silhouette Review:
As models near the end of their life—and entire brands, for
that matter—they want to go out with a bit of class. It is
no different with Oldsmobile and its minivan, the Silhouette.
Both want to leave a good, lasting impression in the minds
of the public.
Oldsmobile will soon be gone, and with it the upscale Silhouette.
For 2004, you won’t find any massive upgrades—to do so wouldn’t
make sense financially—but you will encounter comfort and
convenience.
Comfort and convenience: those are the two ideals the Silhouette
strives to accomplish, and by the looks of things, they’ve
done quite well. This is especially so with the top-of-the-line
Premiere model, a minivan that combines an advanced entertainment
system with countless additional features.
Under the Hood
The engine appointed to the Silhouette is strong enough to
get it up to speed on the highway even when passengers and
goods weigh down the minivan. It is a 3.4-liter V6 with 185
horsepower at 5200 rpm and 210 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
The engine runs smoothly, and the standard 4-speed automatic
transmission shifts with equal ease. Silhouette also offers
impressive fuel economy estimates of 19 mpg for city driving
and 26 mpg on the highway.
Silhouette models are offered in a rear-wheel drive configuration
or an all-wheel drive configuration. The Versatrak all-wheel-drive
system directs torque to the wheels with the most traction
when road surfaces become slippery. Available on GLS and Premiere
models only, Versatrak is the first AWD system to allow for
a flat load floor and stowable third-row seat.
Silhouette also comes equipped with four-wheel independent
rear suspension, which results in impressive handling. Traction
control is offered on two-wheel-drive Silhouette models.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Able to seat eight, the 2004 Silhouette offers a total cargo
volume of 141.9 cubic feet. Well-appointed also refers to
the safety package of the Silhouette. It has a dual-stage
airbag system that calculates vehicle acceleration and crash
severity, then provides the appropriate level of airbag inflation.
The Silhouette also comes standard with side-impact airbags
for the driver and front passenger.
Nothing tops the Premiere model’s standard DVD entertainment
system. Very easy to use, the system allows rear-seat passengers
to watch movies, play video games or listen to audio CDs.
