2004 Pontiac GTO Review:
With the reanimation of the 2004 Pontiac GTO, one of the
very first muscle cars is finally back on the road. There
certainly aren't too many models today that hearken back to
the days of cool, high-powered performance. Luckily for enthusiasts,
Pontiac has brought the GTO back for another go-round.
Oddly enough, the American speedster is actually built by
Holden, Pontiac's Australian branch. Projected annual production
is that there will be around 18,000 vehicles made. So while
you don't have to rush down to the dealership to pick one
up, you shouldn't wait too long if you're interested.
What you'll get if you decide to splurge on a GTO is the
obvious thrill of a powerful V8 engine, aggressive styling
and a thoroughly driver-oriented cockpit. That, plus an idea
of what things were like back in the muscle car heyday.
Under the Hood
The engine under the GTO's hood is a modified Corvette V8.
It is a 5.7-liter LS1 model that cranks out an astounding
350 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 365 lb-ft of torque at 4000
rpm.
Transferring all this power into ridiculous speeds are two
transmission systems: a 4-speed electronic automatic transmission
and a 6-speed manual transmission. You get to choose how the
rear-wheel drive roadster gets up to speed.
You want specs that will blow you away? Here they are: the
2004 Pontiac GTO will go from 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds. It
will also do a quarter mile in less than 14 seconds.
Contributing to the ride quality are seventeen-inch alloy
wheels, performance tires and a fully independent, performance-tuned
suspension featuring direct-acting stabilizing bars and power
rack-and-pinion steering. Traction control and a limited slip
differential also come standard.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The new GTO has four leather bucket seats that you just sink
into. They come in black, or they can be color-coordinated
with the vehicle's exterior color.
Some of the other standard features include air conditioning,
a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with radio controls, a center
console, power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless
entry, a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD changer
and a trip computer.
There's nothing quite like the Pontiac GTO. It has a tradition
and a style all its own, plus a performance package that easily
silences any naysayers.
