Used 2004 Subaru Baja

Buying Guide for the Subaru Baja:

One of the defining traits of Subaru models is versatility. With standard all-wheel drive, they can usually keep going when other, more expensive models fail under the circumstances. This versatility is perhaps best exemplified with the Baja, Subaru’s crossover model that combines the body of a wagon with that of a rugged pickup truck.

The Baja begins as a standard Outback wagon. However, it then loses the covered trunk and adds an open rear cargo bed. The seating drops from five to four, but the toughness level goes up. If you want a Subaru for more demanding applications, the Baja is the model to buy.

The Baja is 6 inches longer overall than the Outback wagon. The wall separating the cargo bed from the cabin has a panel that folds to create a pass-through beneath the fixed rear window. It also comes with a bedliner and, for 2004, in a new turbocharged version.

Under the Hood

Baja Sport and Baja models use the same engine that powers many of the 2004 Outback models. It is a 2.5-liter, horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine that produces 165 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 166 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.

Both 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission are available with the H4 engine. Automatics have a fuel rating of 21/28 mpg (city/highway), while manuals get 21/27 mpg.

The new Baja model uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter H4. It dishes out 210 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 235 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm. 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission are still both available, with slightly lowered fuel ratings.

The Baja has a raised suspension and limited-slip differential on all models. Also standard is Subaru’s all-wheel drive system.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The basic Sport trim has numerous features that fall under the functional and comfort categories. Among these are an AM/FM/CD player, an outside-temperature indicator, a roof rack, a power sunroof, a split folding rear seat and a useful cargo-box light.

The uplevel Baja model adds a few more items to the mix for increased ride quality. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery and a 6-way power driver seat are all standard.

If you like to rock out as you drive, there’s a sound package available. It includes an in-dash 6-disc CD changer, upgraded speakers, tweeter, subwoofer and amplifier.
