Used 2004 Subaru Outback Sedan
Buying Guide for the Subaru Outback Sedan:
It’s curious that there always seem to be more Outback wagons
on the road than Outback sedans. Though the wagon has more
space, the sedan is probably more on the stylish side. Couple
that with supreme handling features that arise from the Outback’s
build quality, engine and all-wheel drive, and you’ve got
yourself quite a vehicle.
Another thing Outback sedan models have over wagons is a
higher degree of standard comfort. The Limited model, for
example, which opens the sedan lineup, still comes with leather
upholstery, front seat side-impact airbags and an AM/FM/weatherband
radio with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer.
So if you’re looking for an inexpensive sedan that offers
all-wheel drive, a nice set of standard features and a very
Subaru-like safety package, you won’t do much better than
the 2004 Outback sedan.
Under the Hood
Base Limited models are equipped with a 2.5-liter, horizontally
opposed 4-cylinder engine. It is capable of generating 165
horsepower at 5600 rpm and 166 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
Uplevel H6 and VDC models give you more bite out of the gates.
They make good use of a 3.0-liter, horizontally opposed 6-cylinder
engine that busts out 212 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 210 lb-ft
of torque at 4400 rpm.
All 2004 Outback sedans use a 4-speed automatic transmission.
The H4 gets a rating of 22/27 mpg (city/highway), while the
H6 comes in at 19/26 mpg (city/highway).
Subaru’s all-wheel drive is standard. It automatically distributes
power between the front and rear wheels based on traction
needs.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The four-door sedan will seat five people. In addition to
the aforementioned standard features, all 2004 Outback sedans
also have 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, air conditioning,
cruise control, a tilt leather-wrapped steering wheel and
heated front seats.
H6 models throw in such items as a one-year subscription
to the OnStar telematics system, automatic climate control,
an 8-way power driver seat and an upgraded sound system. Top-line
VDC models add a theft-deterrent system and a McIntosh sound
system. They also feature traction control and an antiskid
system for added safety.
If you want a little more flare with your Outback sedan,
you can pick up a rear spoiler at an extra cost. You can also
grab an automatic day/night rearview mirror and a security
upgrade kit.
