2004 Toyota 4Runner Review:
The Toyota 4Runner skids into 2004 with its fair share of
upgrades and product improvements. From a newly optional third-row
seat to increased safety features, this year’s 4Runner should
make a sizeable splash in the ever-competitive midsize sport
utility segment.
Safety is one of the primary areas Toyota designers and engineers
focused on with this year’s 4Runner model. Front torso side
airbags and head-protecting curtain side airbags are now available
across the entire lineup. In addition, the curtain airbags
are more advanced than before—they are now designed to deploy
when sensors detect an impending rollover.
The 2004 Toyota 4Runner is offered in three models. Base
SR5 models come with 16-inch wheels, while Sport and Limited
trims feature 17-inch wheels. Step inside if you want a rugged,
comfortable SUV that has all the reliability of a Toyota.
Under the Hood
There are two engines offered with this year’s 4Runner, and
either of them can be had with all three trims. The base configuration
uses a 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 245 horsepower at
5200 rpm and 283 lb-ft of torque at 3400 rpm.
The 4.7-liter V8 engine offered this year really generates
quite a bit of low-end torque for that added snarl. With 235
horsepower at 4800 rpm and 320 lb-ft of torque at 3400 rpm,
it is certainly no slouch.
Both engines are available with rear-wheel drive. V6s also
offer a 4WD system that can be left engaged on dry pavement,
while V8s offer all-wheel drive. Both systems include low-range
gearing and a hill descent control designed to maintain a
slow, steady speed down steep slopes. A similar hill ascent
control is standard for all models, as are antiskid/traction
control and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes.
A firmer suspension is standard on Sport models, optional
for Limiteds. A load-leveling rear air-spring suspension is
available for V8 Limiteds.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
All 4Runners have a basic list of standard features that
is quite enough. Included are air conditioning with automatic
climate control, cruise control, power mirrors, windows (including
tailgate window) and door locks, remote keyless entry and
an AM/FM/cassette/CD player.
A navigation system is an option this year. It also includes
a JBL sound system and rearview TV camera that is activated
once the SUV is put in reverse.
