2004 Toyota Celica - Reviews - Buying Guide

2004 Toyota Celica Buying Resources:

2004 Toyota Celica Review:

Any car that is offered with an Action Package has got to be pretty sporty. That’s the case with this year’s Toyota Celica, a coupe with a good dose of attitude. The Action Package is basically a supped-up base GT model, and it does what it says it does.

The other model in the family is the GT-S. It has its own engine, plus a number of unique features. When you think of a sporty coupe, which is the Celica’s segment designation, the GT-S is probably the first Toyota model that would come to mind.

For 2004, the sole change with the Celica is that high-intensity headlamps are now available for the GT as well as the GT-S model. What doesn’t change is the value and build quality of the Celica. Once again, it was named to the ‘Recommended’ list by Consumer Guide.

Under the Hood

GT models feature a 1.8-liter dual-overhead-cam inline 4-cylinder engine. It cranks out 140 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 125 lb-ft of torque at 4200 rpm. To this I4 can be mated either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Manual GT models get 27/33 mpg (city/highway), while automatics get 29/36 mpg (city/highway).

Top-line GT-S trims receive a similar 1.8-liter I4 engine. It dishes out a peppy 180 horsepower at 7600 rpm and 130 lb-ft of torque at 6800 rpm. Like the other I4, two transmission types are offered: 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift capability.

Manual GT-S models have a fuel rating of 24/33 mpg (city/highway). Automatics get 25/31 mpg (city/highway).

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The Celica handles quite well with power assisted rack-and-pinion steering. Dual front airbags and daytime running lights are also part of the standard package. Antilock brakes and front side airbags are optional.

GT models are equipped with such things as air conditioning, a center console, power mirrors, an AM/FM/cassette/CD player, a digital clock and a rear defogger. To this the Action Package model adds bodyside cladding and a cool adjustable rear spoiler.

With the top-line GT-S model, you up the power and the interior comfort level. That’s why you pay the extra bucks. Its features include alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, power windows and door locks and a JBL sound system.
