2004 Toyota Land Cruiser Review:
Toyota is truly one of the heavyweight auto manufacturers
in the world. Though the company is based in Japan, it manufactures
and sells vehicles worldwide. In 1957, Toyota came over to
the United States to begin selling its vehicles. It hasn’t
looked back since.
But not all Toyota models are built in the US. The Avalon
sedan, for example, is manufactured in Japan. The same goes
for the Land Cruiser, a luxury sport utility vehicle that
is decidedly refined, and also decidedly a Toyota.
The Land Cruiser is a little smaller than the American-made
Toyota Sequoia. However, it costs more because it has a bulging
list of standard comfort features. For 2004, an optional rearview
TV camera is the primary change of note to the import Land
Cruiser.
Under the Hood
One thing you won’t have to worry about with the Land Cruiser
is keeping up with traffic. And while it isn’t supposed to
be used for heavy off-roading on weekend adventures, the Land
Cruiser certainly doesn’t mind plowing through poor weather.
Under the elegant hood of the 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser is
a 4.7-liter dual-overhead-cam V8 engine. It pumps out a juicy
235 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 320 lb-ft of torque at 3400
rpm.
Toyota’s all-wheel drive system is standard with each and
every 2004 Land Cruiser. It provides a stable, secure ride
when others might pack it in. Also standard is a slip-less
5-speed automatic transmission.
The Land Cruiser has a host of advanced components, all of
which warrant its luxury billing. Speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion
steering adjusts the feel of the wheel depending on the speed
of the SUV. Limited-slip center differential and traction
control go about their business quietly but effectively.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Safety is another area that the Land Cruiser covers quite
handily. It has antilock 4-wheel disc brakes with brake assist
for quick, responsive stops. Other safety features include
an antiskid system and fog lights.
Standard comfort features abound. The Land Cruiser has front
and rear air conditioning with front and rear automatic climate
controls, leather upholstery and heated front bucket seats
with power lumbar support.
The new TV camera is included with a navigation system. It
displays a rear view on the navigation screen when Reverse
is selected. The navigation system also shows DVDs on its
in-dash screen with the transmission in Park.
