2004 Toyota Tundra Review:
There’s no sense ignoring what the big news is for Toyota’s
Tundra pickup truck. It’s the introduction of an all-new Double
Cab crew-style model. With it, Toyota tips the scales into
the full-size segment. That’s right GM, Ford and Dodge; now
Toyota is part of the mix. For the competition, that is undoubtedly
bad news.
For full-size pickup truck shoppers, it couldn’t be any sweeter.
The new Double Cab has four full-size doors and a huge interior
that gives you and your four passengers ample leg, shoulder
and head room. If it’s hot outside, you can drop the first-in-class
power vertical sliding rear window for maximum flow-through
ventilation.
Why not keep going about the Double Cab? After all, it is
big news. Tundra Double Cabs have a 6.2-ft cargo box with
walls 4 inches higher than on other models. In addition, their
unique frame adds 12.2 inches to the wheelbase and 12.6 inches
to the overall length. Finally, they’re also 3 inches higher
and 4 inches wider.
Under the Hood
A strong V8 engine and 4-speed automatic transmission are
standard in Double Cabs, available in other Tundras. Regular
cab and Access models also offer a V6 engine with 5-speed
manual transmission or optional automatic transmission.
That big, bad V8 engine found under the hood of every new
Double Cab is a 4.7-liter, 285-cubic inch model. It pumps
out 240 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 315 lb-ft of torque at
3400 rpm.
The V6 with the rest of the crew is no slouch either. A 3.4-liter
model, it delivers 190 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 220 lb-ft
of torque at 3600 rpm.
All Tundras offer rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It
must be disengaged on dry pavement, but it does include low-range
gearing. Antilock brakes are standard.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
With all the hype, some people may have forgotten about Tundra
regular cabs and Access Cab extended cabs. Just as capable,
they offer 8-ft cargo beds (regular cab) and 6.5-ft beds (Access
Cabs).
There are a number of TRD off-road deals this year. They
add such things as off-road suspension, Bilstein shock absorbers
and more.
Top-line Limited trims have the standard power sliding rear
window, allows wheels and offer optional leather upholstery.
Exclusive to Double Cabs are standard antiskid/traction control,
and optional sunroof and rear DVD entertainment.
