Used 2004 Volkswagen Golf
Buying Guide for the Volkswagen Golf:
The 2004 Volkswagen Golf is roughly parallel in equipment
to the Jetta. However, while the Jetta comes in sedan and
wagon body styles, the Golf is offered as a two-door and four-door
hatchback.
As such, the Golf is perhaps a little more on the sporty
side than its Jetta siblings. However, both come in a wide
array of trims, with several different power levels available.
The Golf alone can be had in four models, and that’s not including
the GTI (covered separately).
Though there aren’t too many changes to the Golf for 2004,
there is one new option that adds an even greater level of
security. It is the OnStar assistance system, designed to
keep you covered at all times.
Under the Hood
With base GL models, the Golf is fitted with a 2.0-liter
inline 4-cylinder engine. It is able to muster 115 horsepower
at 5200 rpm and 122 lb-ft of torque at 2600 rpm. 5-speed manual
and 4-speed automatic transmissions are offered.
The other engine powering 2004 Golfs is a 1.9-liter turbodiesel
inline 4-cylinder engine. It delivers 100 horsepower at 4000
rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm.
Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering translates into a
precise, responsive feel at you fingertips. Independent front
and rear suspension components dampen the rough stuff on the
road.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Safety is one area that Volkswagen is known to take very
seriously. The Golf is a typical Volkswagen in this respect.
All models have at least dual front airbags, front side airbags,
curtain side airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. An
antiskid system is optional for 2004.
The Golf is also fairly well equipped in terms of comfort
features. This makes even long rides quite easy to handle.
Some of the things you’ll find include air conditioning, cruise
control, height-adjustable front bucket seats, a center console,
heated power mirrors, power windows and door locks and an
AM/FM/cassette/CD player.
Golf models aren’t as popular as the Jetta duo, but they
certainly aren’t lonely. They can be found in all parts of
the country. For northern climates, Volkswagen offers a Cold
Weather Package. It includes heated front seats and washer
jets. Anyone who’s ever experienced the frustration of dealing
with frozen washers while driving down the road will appreciate
this option.
