2004 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon Review:
The designers that populate automotive companies are a restless
lot. Just as soon as they turn out a model, they’re back at
the drawing board looking for ways to improve the look and
feel of the vehicle.
So it is at Volkswagen. This year, designers decided to address
both the front and rear ends of the Jetta. At the front, they
gave all Jetta models a new grille, while in the rear new
taillights complete the upgrade.
The result is a more modern, refined feel for the Jetta duo
(Jetta sedans covered separately). It also means that competitors
are going to have to work long and hard to top America’s number-one
European car.
Jetta wagons are the more inconspicuous of the two Jetta
body styles. Like all wagon counterparts—regardless of make
or brand—they are bigger and roomier, with more cabin room
for families and cluttered singles alike.
Under the Hood
While Jetta sedans feature a top-line GLI model with a surprisingly
powerful V6 engine, Jetta wagons are content to offer a stable
of inline 4-cylinder engines. These powertrains have proven
to be more than enough to drive the lineup.
The first engine breathing life into the front-wheel drive
Jetta wagon for 2004 is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder model.
It offers 115 horsepower and 122 lb-ft of torque, and can
be mated to either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
The next engine on the lot is a 1.9-liter turbodiesel I4
with 100 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. It uses 5-speed
manual or 5-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift
mode.
The strongest engine available with 2004 Jetta wagons is
a 1.8-liter turbocharged I4. It pumps out 180 horsepower and
173 lb-ft of torque. Jetta wagons with this engine (GL 1.8
and GLS 1.8) also receive standard traction control.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Offered in a total of six trims, no one can accuse the 2004
Jetta wagon lineup of not being diverse enough. All models
are four-door, five-passenger models with up to 51.9 cubic
feet of cargo volume.
The GL is the base trim. It includes air conditioning, cruise
control, a split folding rear seat, heated power mirrors,
a cargo cover and more.
2004 Jettas offer an optional Leather Package. It includes
leather upholstery, heated front seats and washer nozzles
and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with cruise and radio
controls.
