Used 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
Buying Guide for the Volkswagen Touareg:
To give you an idea of the high-performance build quality
of the all-new 2004 Volkswagen Touareg, one need only know
that it shares the same platform as the Porsche Cayenne. And
like the Cayenne, the Touareg is a luxury sport utility vehicle
that excels in every facet of driving.
If you’d like more proof that the Touareg is well put-together,
consider this: the Touareg has already been named Motor
Trend's 2004 Sport/Utility of the Year. Basically, this
is a premium SUV with loads of standard equipment, an innovative
design and the longevity that is associated with the Volkswagen
name.
The four-door Touareg will seat five people and surround
them in luxury. Two engines are available, the more powerful
of the two really capable of getting up to speed in a wink.
Under the Hood
To begin with, the new Touareg is equipped with Volkswagen’s
4XMotion all-wheel drive system. Turning a knob to "cross
country" lets you engage low range gearing, and one more
click locks the center differential. A locking rear differential
is optional.
V6 models feature, not surprisingly, a strong V6 engine.
It is a 3.2-liter model, and it produces 220 horsepower at
5400 rpm and 225 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. Mated to the
V6 is a 6-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift
mode.
V8 models are very impressive. Their engine is a 4.2-liter
V8 that will crank out up to 310 horsepower at 6200 rpm and
302 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm.
Antilock brakes and an antiskid system also are standard.
A height-adjusting air suspension is optional. It lifts ground
clearance to 11.8 inches.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Touareg is given a rear liftgate for easy loading and
unloading of goods. With the rear seat folded all the way
down, the new SUV offers 70 cubic feet of cargo room.
Inside the Touareg, comfort is standard. All models have
air conditioning with dual-zone automatic climate controls,
a tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio
controls, a power sunroof, an AM/FM/CD player, a trip computer
and rain-sensing intermittent wipers with heated nozzles.
V8 models add such items as leather upholstery, 12-way power
front seats with lumbar adjustment and a memory system for
the driver seat and mirrors.
The options for the Touareg’s debut year include a rear-obstacle
detection system, 4-zone automatic climate controls and the
OnStar telematics system.
