2005 Chevrolet Astro | Review | Buying Guide
The Astro is an identical twin to the GMC Safari. It is pretty much as old-school as they come, a legacy that speaks to the tried and tested mantra of quality, durability and spaciousness.
Both Astro and the Safari can boast the title of being the only minivans in America with a truck-based design. With a structure that has been around since the late 1980s, both customers and engineers agree that Astro found a winning formula for success.
On the down side: this year marks that last go-round for the Astro. Yet with standard antilock four-wheel disc brakes with a highly responsive Hydroboost hydraulic assist power brake booster and GM's Dynamic Rear Proportioning, it is still as safe as most vans on the market.
Under the Hood
Each and every 2005 Astro model receives a 4.3-liter Vortec V6 engine. It will deliver up to 190 horsepower at 4400 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. To this engine is mated a 4-speed electronic automatic transmission with overdrive.
The Astro comes with either rear-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. The AWD system operates in rear-wheel drive until it senses rear-wheel slippage, then transfers torque to the front axle to help regain traction. Fuel ratings for 2004 are 16/20 mpg (city/highway) for rear-wheel drive models, 14/17 mpg (city/highway) for those with AWD.
Also optional is a Trailering Special Equipment Package. It adds a weight-distributing hitch platform and an 8-lead wiring harness.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
As mentioned, there are no changes to the final version of the Chevrolet Astro. That means that in addition to standard eight-person seating capacity, the minivan also offers 170 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats removed.
The interior is not only spacious; it is also safe. It provides energy-absorbing foam behind trim panels, moldings, the headliner and all other vital areas to protect occupants from potential head injuries.
Though it is more rugged than refined, the 2005 Astro does offer a nice blend of add-ons for comfort. Among them are rear air conditioning, leather upholstery, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM/cassette/CD player and rear radio controls.
The 2005 Astro: buy one while you still can, and experience the strong Chevy tradition of quality.
