2005 Chevrolet Avalanche | Review | Buying Guide
The 2005 Avalanche is termed a large pickup truck, which to anyone who has ever seen one roll by can attest, is quite an understatement. The entry that led the way in the ‘transformer’ vehicle revolution still claims the title as one of the most unique and versatile models on the road today.
Brawny and luxurious at the same time, the Avalanche is an SUV/pickup truck crossover with a midgate separating the cabin from the cargo bed. If you lower the midgate and rear seat, the bed extends from 5.3 to 8.1-ft. Offered in a half-ton 1500 series and an even bigger 2500 series (with more power), there is no shortage of muscle with the Avalanche.
For 2005, Chevy gives owners the option of picking up a slick navigation system, as well as a stylish new chrome package for customers that like a bit of shine with their ride. The innovative spirit, as always, is standard with this formidable transformer .
Under the Hood
Power is not something that is lacking with either Avalanche model. 1500s feature a 5.3-liter V8 engine that is as comfortable on the road as it is off it. It can generate 295 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
Larger 2500s have an 8.1-liter Vortec V8 engine with 320 horsepower at 4200 rpm and 445 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. They also have heavy-duty suspension for even more rugged ability. In other words, these guys can pull and tow just about anything that your average pickup can.
Optional on 1500s and standard on 2500s is GM's Autotrac 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range gearing. For 2005, all models have automatic transmission, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and a tire-pressure monitor.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
With the midgate and rear seat up, the Avalanche can seat a maximum of six (with a front bench seat). Fold them down and you lose three places, but gain even more cargo bed space. But if you think the process of transforming the Avalanche is an arduous one, think again; most people can get it done in seconds.
In addition to a long list of standard features, there are plenty of options to be had for 2005. Optional satellite radio and rear DVD entertainment continue from last year, as do a sunroof, heated front bucket seats, leather upholstery and power-adjustable pedals.
