2005 will forever be a year to remember if you’re a staunch Corvette enthusiast—and there are more than a few of those out there. This year sees a redesigned model with more power, a new look and better performance all around.

Pretty much everything changes this year. The new model, named the C6 to denote Corvette's 6th design generation since 1953, comes as a hatchback coupe with lift-off roof panel or as a convertible with a fabric soft top and heated glass rear window.

New this year is a 6.0-liter V8 LS2 engine, based on GM’s Gen IV small-block family. The LS2 is the most powerful standard small-block engine ever offered in Corvette, enabling the speedster to go from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds, and in 4.1 seconds with the optional Z51 Performance Package.

Under the Hood

The 6.0-liter V8 has an increase in horsepower this year, resulting in ratings of 400 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 400 lb-ft of torque at 4000. There are two transmission choices: a 6-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.

The Tremec 6-speed manual system features improved shifting characteristics with new synchronizers that reduce travel by 10 percent, and a redesigned shifter lever. The Hydra-Matic 4L65-E automatic transmission is an upgraded version of the C5’s 4L60-E, and includes GM’s advanced Performance Algorithm Shifting, which automatically selects the optimal gear for a given driving condition.

Continued from last year are antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, antiskid/traction control and two suspension options. GM's Magnetic Selective Ride Control automatically adjusts firmness to match road surfaces within driver-selectable Tour and Sport modes. A Z51 package has a firmer nonadjustable suspension, larger brakes, and, with automatic transmission, acceleration-enhancing gearing.

But there’s more. The C6’s suspension cradles, control arms, knuckles, springs, dampers, bushings, stabilizer bars and steering gear have all been redesigned for 2005.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

Designers took a cue from the past in creating the new Corvette. This year’s model is 5 inches shorter and about 1 inch narrower than its predecessor. It has larger wheels (18-inch in front, 19-inch in rear) and dramatic fender forms. Also featured are exposed headlamps—not seen on Corvettes since 1962.

There are plenty of things on the inside for your comfort. Air conditioning with dual-zone automatic climate controls, leather upholstery, a center console, heated power mirrors, power windows, remote keyless entry, keyless access and an AM/FM/CD/MP3 player sit at the top of the list.
