2005 Used Chevrolet Equinox Buying Guide
The Equinox is a brand-new model for 2005, a compact sport utility vehicle that seeks to push the boundaries of the segment. With that in mind, engineers gave the new model the longest wheelbase and the largest door openings among all compact SUVs.
In addition, the new Equinox is one of the few compact SUVs with a standard V6 engine under its hood. This gives the vehicle plenty of snarl when needed. Further distinguishing the new Equinox is the car-type platform it uses, which it shares with the Vue from GM's Saturn division.
The Equinox has a number of innovations, including a rear seat that can slide fore and aft eight inches for cargo. At the rear, a removable shelf can be positioned several ways to carry two levels of goods. The panel has carpet on one side and a washable plastic surface on the other, plus handy grocery bag hooks.
Under the Hood
There is plenty of power moving the new Equinox. Its V6 engine is a 3.4-liter overhead valve model, and it offers 185 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 210 lb-ft of torque at 3800 rpm. It is coupled to an electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission.
Owners can equip the front-drive Equinox with an on-demand all-wheel-drive system. It delivers power to the front wheels during normal driving conditions, but seamlessly transfers power to the rear wheels if front wheel slippage is detected. While primarily intended for on-road use, this AWD system can be applied for off-road use.
The ride is smooth thanks to an independent MacPherson strut suspension up front and a four-link coil spring layout in the rear. The rear suspension has a trailing arm plus three additional locating links to facilitate a low, wide load floor and maximum rear passenger space.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
There are two model trims offered for the Equinox’s debut: LS and LT. Base LS models have such standard features as air conditioning, cloth upholstery, front bucket seats with height-adjustable driver seat, a center console, power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM/CD player and a digital clock.
Uplevel LTs add cruise control, fog lights, rear privacy glass, a roof rack and alloy wheels.
Available features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, curtain side airbags, satellite radio, OnStar assistance, and 17-inch wheels in place of standard 16s.
