2005 Chevrolet Impala | Review | Buying Guide
The Impala is the largest sedan in the Chevy fleet, a vehicle that is powerful, spacious and comforting to ride in. Another key selling point of the Impala is the diversity of the lineup. With three models—base, LS and SS—and three V6 engines to choose from, the indecisive are provided with a range of options to fret over.
For 2005, the Impala is given a number of upgrades. The top-line SS now looks sleeker and more refined, both inside and out, there are more options and different wheel size availability. Plus, there are new colors thrown into the mix: Laser Blue Metallic, Sport Red Metallic and Silverstone Metallic.
One of the new features is standard OnStar in all models. OnStar-equipped Impalas feature new sixth-generation hardware with digital and analog coverage. OnStar’s Gen 6 hardware also includes upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy.
Under the Hood
Impalas are built with the goal of outstanding quality in mind, and they more than often live up to that standard. For example: all Impala models feature front-wheel drive, a Hydra-Matic 4-speed automatic transmission, fully independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and 4-wheel disc brakes.
The base Impala is fitted with a 3.4-liter V6 with 180 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 200 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Moving up one notch on the model scale brings you to the LS, which features a 3.8-liter V6 with 200 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 225 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
At the top of the line is the sporty SS. This is a model that has no troubling merging on to the highway or darting off the starting blocks. Under its hood is a 3.8-liter Supercharged V6 with 240 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Impalas are all well-apportioned in terms of standard features. Even the base model comes with such things as air conditioning with manual dual-zone climate controls, interior air filter and power mirrors, windows and door locks.
The Impala LS expands the list to include passenger assist grips, a trunk cargo net, split-folding rear seat and cruise control. Not to be outdone, the Impala SS tops the line by adding a 200-peak-watt AM/FM/CD sound system, front bucket seats with leather seating surfaces, power driver's seat and carpeted floor mats embroidered with the "SS" logo.
