2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx | Review | Buying Guide
The Malibu Maxx debuted last year with glowing reviews. Combining the efficient well-roundedness of the Malibu sedan (covered separately) with a range of new, practical features, the Malibu Maxx compliment the line by adding extra functionality and a few features to boot.
That added functionality is best exemplified in the design of the Malibu Maxx. Though it has a 6-inch longer wheelbase than the sedan, it is not as long overall.
The result of this crossover is 106 cubic feet of passenger space and a luxurious 41 inches of legroom with the rear seats pushed all the way back. The Maxx’s rear seat also reclines and slides fore and aft in order to provide extra cargo space or rear leg room.
Under the Hood
There are two trim levels for the Maxx’s second go-round: LS and LT. Both the base LS and top-line LT model have a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 200 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 220 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. It is mated to a 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, giving it an estimated fuel economy of 22/30 mpg (city/highway).
Independent front and rear suspension allows the Malibu Maxx to hover calmly over bumpy roads and uneven surfaces. Power-assisted variable-speed rack-and-pinion steering provides nice, sharp responsiveness.
Along with the Malibu, the Malibu Maxx uses GM’s Epsilon architecture. The Epsilon body structure gives the Malibu Maxx a high degree of structural stiffness, which greatly enhances both vehicle handling and interior acoustics.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
For safety, the Malibu Maxx has antilock brakes with Dynamic Rear Proportioning, traction control and dual front airbags. Curtain side airbags are optional.
The Malibu Maxx seeks to distinguish itself further with a standard fixed rear glass skylight. Both driver and passenger-side rear occupants have the option of opening or closing a standard split/retractable shade to control the amount of light coming through the skylight.
Also standard a rigid cargo cover/tailgate table and, for 2005, a rear wiper on LT versions. In addition, LT models have such features as automatic climate control, a remote starter, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a 6-way power driver seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls. Rear DVD entertainment is an exclusive Maxx option.
