2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo | Review | Buying Guide
The coupe cousin to Chevy’s Impala sedan may strike some astute observers as looking a little familiar. The reason is this: Chevy Monte Carlo is synonymous with the tradition of NASCAR. And the reason for that is that the 2005 model is built with the same winning passion as Monte Carlo race cars.
Anyone doubting the Monte Carlo’s racing lineage need only look at the availability of the 2005 Winner's Circle Appearance Package. It decks out the coupe in diamond-cut cast-aluminum wheels, a race-inspired rear spoiler and side graphics applique.
For 2005, the Monte Carlo’s lineup is slightly altered. Last year’s SS package is now renamed the LT. It is joined by a base LS trim and the top-line, engine revving Supercharged SS (covered in a separate review).
Under the Hood
Base LS models are equipped with a 3.4-liter V6 engine that generates 180 horsepower and 205 lb-ft of torque. While not the burner that the Supercharged SS is, you won’t find any power lacking with the LS model.
The newly-named SS model has more bite under its hood. The engine powering the way is a 3.8-liter Series II V6 with 200 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. Chevy is proud to boast that the Series II V6 has unsurpassed V6 highway fuel economy in its class—as it should in today’s climate.
LS and LT 2005 Monte Carlos have electronically-controlled 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. In true racing fashion, the Monte Carlo also features dual exhaust outlets and stainless-steel muffler and tailpipe.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The base LS model comes with 4-wheel disc brakes, while the LT upgrades to 4-wheel antilock disc brakes. LTs also have standard traction control, which can be added to the LS at an extra fee (along with antilock brakes).
Standard comfort features with the LS include air conditioning with dual-zone manual climate controls, the OnStar assistance system with one-year service, cloth upholstery, front bucket seats, power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry and automatic headlights.
LT models add alloy wheels, driver-seat lumbar adjustment, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls and more. Satellite radio, leather upholstery and a power sunroof are optional.
