2005 Chevrolet Tahoe | Review | Buying Guide
There is one thing, and one thing only, that the head honchos at Chevrolet want to accomplish this year with their Tahoe: keep it the best-selling full-size sport utility vehicle. To that end, they simply offer some appealing upgrades, and more of the same.
As one of the main changes for this new model year, GM’s OnStar safety and security system is now standard in all equipment groups for 2005. All 2005 Tahoes also have a rear liftgate with lift-up glass, and their side-sill assist steps have been redesigned for improved aerodynamics and durability.
There’s also better fuel economy, a new alternator, an improved cooling system and a new navigation system. The new navigation system is optional for all but LS models—the base trim. It includes a touch screen integrated with a new audio head unit.
Under the Hood
Powering the entry-level Tahoe LS this year is a 4.8-liter V8 engine. It delivers up to 285 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Standard with the LT and optional with the LS is a 5.3-liter V8 engine. It can muster 295 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
GM’s Hydra-Matic 4L60-E 4-speed automatic transmission is standard with both engines. The 2005 Tahoe can tow up to 7,700 pounds (3,493 kg) when equipped with a special trailering package. It includes a t railer-hitch platform, transmission-oil cooler, a heavy-duty air cleaner and a trailer-brake-wiring harness.
GM’s StabiliTrak stability enhancement system is available on models with the 5.3-liter V8. It is very useful in tough driving conditions, keeping the big SUV in perfect control. Also offered is Autoride Suspension, which i ncludes variable-rate shock absorbers and load-leveling rear suspension.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Tahoe is big, roomy and versatile on the inside. With a third-row seat, the capacity is for nine passengers. The third-row rear seat has a 50/50 split-fold design to provide a variety of cargo/passenger configurations. The seats can be flipped forward and stowed for more cargo room, or individually and easily removed to create a flat load surface.
Standard features with the uplevel LT package include the OnStar assistance system with one-year service, leather upholstery, heated 10-way power front bucket seats, power-adjustable pedals, automatic climate controls, a Bose AM/FM radio with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer, satellite radio and steering-wheel and rear radio controls.
