Chrysler is not what it used to be, it’s better. A merger with Daimler, a whole range of new vehicles and an upgrade of existing styles has transformed this manufacturer’s market offerings.

The 2005 Chrysler Pacifica, new last year, is part of that transformation. Sleekly designed, part SUV, part luxury sedan, part performance car and part wagon, the Pacifica is an unconventional response to changes in the sensibility of the North American motoring public, who are looking for more versatility, more gadgetry and better performance than ever before.

The Pacifica has such a mix of uncommon features that Chrysler is laying claim to an entirely new mode of premium transportation called the sports tourer. The Pacifica manages three rows of seating for six-passenger capability, plus available all-wheel drive and an advanced suspension system to make it feel as though you are driving a sedan.

Under the Hood

Chrysler has added an engine choice for the 2005 Pacifica, a slightly smaller engine, paradoxically, but one with better fuel economy, more horsepower and slightly more torque, as one would expect from an upgrade to a higher trim level. The Base model Pacifica comes with a 3.8-liter overhead valve V6 engine that pumps out 215 hp at 5000 rpm and 245 lb-ft of torque at 4000 to manage 18/25 mpg (city/hwy).

The upgrade 3.5-liter is a different story. This 3.5-liter V6 engine is capable of dishing out 250 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 3950 rpm. A 4-speed automatic transmission is mated to both these engines, providing seamless shifting. The available all-wheel drive system (standard on the top-level Limited model) provides maximum handling and feel in inclement weather.

The 2005 Chrysler Pacifica is designed to be towing capable and a load-leveling rear suspension combines with antilock brakes to support this goal. However, as family vehicle the Pacifica is also very safety-oriented. A full allotment of safety equipment is available. The Limited comes with dual front, curtain side and driver-side knee airbags, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, rear-obstacle detection and a tire-pressure monitor.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The Pacifica has plenty of room and easy transfer from passenger to cargo space as the two rear seats fold flat. However, this is also a luxury sedan. The Base 2005 Pacifica is stocked with air conditioning with dual-zone climate controls, an Infinity AM/FM/CD player, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, cruise control, 8-way power driver’s seat, heated power mirrors and power everything else, just to name some highlights.

An upgrade to the Touring class is a slightly different story, adding automatic climate control, 10-way power seat, and some other style and convenience details. Step up to the Limited, the top trim level, for leather upholstery, heated seats, memory system, power sunroof, power liftgate, and assorted extras.

Optional add-ons are also exciting, with a navigation system, an in-dash 6-disc/ DVD entertainment system, a power sunroof, UConnect hands-free cellular and a bunch of exterior and performance add-ons like 19-inch chrome alloy wheels.
