2005 Dodge Magnum | Review | Buying Guide
Move over Intrepid and make way for the Magnum. Dodge casts its large sedan the way of the Dodo bird this year in order to unveil the new Magnum. The switch really does live up to the saying ‘out with the old and in with the new,’ as the Magnum is nothing at all like a simple sedan.
The Magnum is yet another versatile crossover vehicle. A large car, the Magnum is like a wagon, but with more power than you might normally associate with such a vehicle. It has a rear liftgate without separate-opening glass as well.
For the debut year, the Magnum is offered in three models—SE, SXT and RT—with three engines available as well. SE models are rear-wheel drive; AWD is standard on the SXT, optional on the RT.
Under the Hood
Base SE models have a 2.7-liter V6 with 190 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 190 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. If you want more oomph, the SXT has a 3.5-liter V6 that offers 250 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 380000 rpm.
At the top of the line in terms of power, price and features is the impressive RT model. It uses a muscular 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine with amazing specs of 340 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 390 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. The V8 features Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System, which deactivates four cylinders in idle and cruise conditions to save fuel. In addition to its unique engine, the RT also rides on firmer suspension components.
The SE has a 4-speed automatic transmission; the other models get a 5-speed automatic with a manual shift gate. 4-wheel disc brakes are standard; optional on all is rear load-leveling suspension.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The four-door Magnum is designed with cargo-carrying flexibility in mind. It features split folding rear seatbacks, and provides a whopping 71.6 cubic feet of cargo volume.
SEs and SXTs have 17-inch wheels, the RT 18s. RTs also have a standard features lineup that includes such appointments as leather upholstery, an 8-way power driver seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated power mirrors and a Boston Acoustics sound system.
Available are adjustable pedals, satellite radio, and Chrysler's UConnect, which uses the audio system as a hands-free, wireless link to cell phones. Also optional on all is a Protection Group that includes front side airbags and front and rear head-protecting curtain side airbags.
