2005 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 | Review | Buying Guide
The big news for the Dodge Ram heavy-duty lineup of ¾-ton 2500 models and 1-ton 3500s is the re-introduction of what the manufacturer calls the Power Wagon. Based on the 2500, it is a model that is completely geared towards serious off-roading adventures.
To that end, Dodge gives the burly Power Wagon class-exclusive electric locking front and rear differentials, class-exclusive electronic disconnecting front sway bar, the tallest standard tires offered with 33-inch BF Goodrich tires and a custom-built Warn 12,000 lb. winch.
The rest of the lineup should not be overshadowed, however. Dodge Ram 2500s and 3500s come in regular cab or Quad Cab four-door crew cab models. Quad Cabs have an added three-passenger rear seat and either a 6.3 or 8-ft cargo bed; regular cabs come with the 8-ft bed. Dual rear wheels come with most 3500 models.
Under the Hood
There’s enough power in the offerings from Dodge to handle any of your work applications, and then some. The base model is a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with 345 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 375 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm.
There’s also a new ‘600’ High Output Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 engine. It cranks out a mean 325 horsepower at 2900 rpm and 600 lb-ft of torque at 1600 rpm.
A 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard with the 5.7-liter V8, while a 6-speed manual version is offered with the diesel engine. Automatic in 5-speeds (5.7-liter V8) and 4-speeds (diesel engine) are also offered.
The Power Wagon boasts best-in-class wheel articulation with new suspensions designs. The front suspension uses a solid front axle with coil spring design for better wheel articulation. The rear suspension has a new single stage leaf design and uses unique, softer spring settings.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Dodge Ram’s rear seats offer an optional 60/40 split, which allows the rear seat cushions to fold up and create a tall storage area from floor to ceiling. Also optional is a steel floor section under the back seats that can fold open to form a flat load floor.
For 2005, a sunroof is available for the first time the Quad Cab. A new Sirius satellite radio system (late availability) UConnect hands-free cellular phone system with Bluetooth technology and a new integrated radio/navigation system are also available.
