2005 Ford Escape XLT | Review | Buying Guide
The 2005 Ford Escape is the smallest of the Ford SUV series. If you want the features of an SUV but also need a vehicle that makes sense on the commute and when trying to find a downtown parking spot, the compact SUV class starts to make a lot of sense and the Ford Escape makes a lot of sense if you are going to buy a compact SUV. The Ford Escape is offered with multiple trim levels, a couple of engine choices (the V6s reviewed here and the 4-cylinders in another review), a host of optional extras, both stand-alone and packaged, and truly remarkable class-leading standard safety equipment.
For 2005, the Escape has seen a lot of significant changes with improvements to engine performance, safety, interior and exterior styling and sound-baffling for a quieter, more comfortable and more powerful ride.
The Limited trim is the top of the line when it comes to 2005 Escape models. They have power, grace, style and comfort all wrapped up in one nice package. Ford knows how to spoil customers that are willing to spend a little, and the Escape Limited is just one example of this. The XLT Sport adds 16-inch bright machined aluminum wheels, “Dark Shadow Grey” fascia, cladding and wheel-lip moldings and black step bars for an edgy and aggressive look.
Under the Hood
Up-level XLT, XLT Sport and Limited models house a 3.0-liter V6 engine. They also use 4-speed automatic transmission. The result is 201 horsepower at 5900 rpm and 196 lb-ft of torque at 4700 rpm.
Customers can choose between a front-wheel drive setup or a full -time four-wheel drive system that lets the driver choose two different settings: 4x4 Auto or 4x4 ON.
When properly equipped, the Escape has the ability to tow up to 3,500 pounds. 2004 models use MacPherson strut front suspension to isolate road forces. At the rear, an independent suspension contributes to a smooth, bump-less ride. ABS is standard on all Escapes, as is an extensive list of other safety equipment.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The four-door Escape seats a total of five passengers. The extensive 2005 model changes included a redesigned interior that features a flow-through console and floor-mounted shifter, new gauges, more storage spaces and upgraded seat cushions and fabrics. The Escape has also seen improvements to the sound baffling, resulting in a quieter and more luxurious ride. Major engineering efforts to quiet the interior include new sound-absorbing panels and tighter sealing measures to reduce cabin noise.
The XLTs and Limited Escapes offer a standard AM/FM/CD player with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer. The Limited model really wraps you in style with leather upholstery and a leather-coated steering wheel. In addition a number of exclusive options are available for these higher trim levels. One such deal, available with Limited models only, is a Luxury Comfort Package that adds a handy r ear-obstacle-detection system, heated front seats and mirrors and a Mach sound system.
