2005 Ford Five Hundred | Review | Buying Guide
The 2005 Ford Five Hundred is a new generation of vehicle. Innovation, luxury and cargo-carrying versatility mark out this vehicle as one of the surprises of 2005.
Like Dr. Who’s TARDIS, to date myself with a reference few might recognize, the Five Hundred seems larger inside than out. Though it is a mid-size sedan, it feels like a large sedan crossed with an SUV. Elevated seating positions improve visibility while innovative fold-flat seats allow room for 8-foot long items that can slide in the back and extend all the way to the dashboard without obstruction. This is in case the 21 cubic foot trunk doesn’t have room for what you want to carry. It will apparently accommodate 8 full size golf bags.
The Five Hundred is offered in SE, SEL and Limited models.
Under the Hood
The Five Hundred offers a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel-drive and a choice of continuously variable (CVT) or 6-speed automatic transmissions. On AWD models, self-leveling shocks sense ride height and use energy from the vehicle’s motion to raise the shock to the desired ride level. Also, all models have precise rack-and-pinion steering, a fully independent suspension and a stiff body structure, further contributing to a confident ride and handling.
A single engine powers either option with the 3.0-liter Duratec V6 for 203 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 207 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm. This is quite comparable to the larger and heavier Crown Victoria but affords better mileage because of the innovative transmission options. 20/27 mpg is achieved by the AWD edition (city/hwy).
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Five Hundred is Ford’s new flagship and the base SE is not basic at all, with air conditioning, cruise control, AM/FM/CD and a full suite of power features. Stepping up to the top-level adds leather upholstery with heated seats and MP3-compatible high-end audio.
Inviting materials and surface treatments are key elements of the interior styling, from smooth metal-plated door handles to high-quality fabrics and/or leather surfaces. SEL and Limited models have burled wood-pattern appliqués on the instrument panel, while the SE edition features appliqués that resemble metal mesh.
The Safety and Security package includes front seat mounted side impact air bags, curtain side airbags, heated power mirrors, proximity lighting and an alarm system. Rear obstacle detection is also available.
